Fourth of July Summer Fashion!

Wow, does anyone else feel like you blinked and suddenly you’re standing in the middle of summer?  It seems we were just talking about the Colors of the Year back in February, and now it’s time to talk summer fashion!  The Fourth of July is just around the corner, so if you’re looking for some patriotic apparel to celebrate the land of the free, check out our top picks from our latest arrivals!

It’s always fun to mix and match, but what could be more fun than sporting a matched set playsuit?  The light chambray fabric has a weathered look with frayed seam detail and delicate white embroidery with a Native American-inspired tribal pattern.  We love the sporty and laid-back appeal to this feminine ensemble, and it’s the perfect answer to “What am I going to wear?” to celebrate the 4th!

Maybe it’s just because I’m an ’80s baby, but nothing says “summer” to me like tie dye!  This cut-out shoulder top is very on-trend for 2016, and the soft, oversized fabric will keep you breezy at those outdoor celebrations.  The Shibori tie dye pattern is reminiscent of our grand ol’ flag with horizontal blocks of red, white, and blue.  Pair with your favorite white jeans or shorts for some funky summer fun!

Dani tie dye top

Dani Top – $22.95

If you want to sport your patriotic colors with a more creative expression, this gorgeous top will give you a little splash of variety!  The mint background beautifully features red ranunculus and blue cornflowers in an elegant pattern.  If you’re looking for a slightly more formal look for your holiday, check out this print in a lovely and simple sleeveless dress!

You just can’t get better than simple, clean, classic white.  A thin white cotton dress is the South’s LBD – versatile, classic, and COMFORTABLE!  Let’s face it, in this humid heat, you’ve gotta have some comfort.  The Gracee dress may be my favorite item of our summer collection with it’s off-the-shoulder neckline and eyelet detail on the ruffled sleeves and scalloped hem.  It’s the perfect combination of elegance and casual comfort for an outdoor celebration!

Well, we kept it short and sweet today, y’all, but those are my favorite Walker picks for the summer holiday.  Tell us your July  4th celebration plans in the comments below!

~ A note from the author, Sydney: Some of the most unforgettable summer memories are made over this special holiday.  The hallmarks of my July usually involve watermelon, fireworks, boiled peanuts, and Coca-Cola.  Sometimes it’s easy to just focus on the dead heat and scent of bug spray (let’s be honest), but I hope your holiday is special this year with memories made with family and friends, and a sacred moment to recognize the sacrifices men and women have made for our 240 years of precious freedom.  Don’t let the day go by without thanking someone who has sacrificed their normalcy, their finances, their time with family, or that last full measure of devotion, their lives.  Semper Fi.

If you’re like me, sundresses invoke the same emotion as the perfect spring day that’s sunny with a high of 75.  Oh, happy day 🙂  Long or short, sleeveless, strappy, or strapless, a good sundress is the perfect hallmark for your warm weather closet essentials.  For the practical shopper, check out our latest  in colorful Piko sundresses for comfortable versatility that you can dress up or down for any activity.  If you’re shopping for special occasion, shop sundresses in fashion forward prints or fabrics like Victorian florals, chambray, or linen for a more refined silhouette.

Athletic wear has come a long way from the shiny and loud neon spandex of the ’80s, and now you can feel comfortable to go anywhere in your workout gear like our All For Color athletic and swimwear lines available at Walker Boutique West.  A high neckline the hottest trend in swimwear this year, so be sure to stop by to find your favorite mix and match two pieces!

Shibori tie dye patterns appeared in recent years, bringing a refreshing and more sophisticated take on a beloved retro design.  At Walker, you will find stunning oversized tunics and fringed tanks in glorious combinations of marbled colors that make a statement piece for your ensembles.  Pair these with tribal statement necklaces from Designs by Devra Jewelry like her best-selling pieces adorned with horns!

And speaking of jewelry…

A good rule of thumb is to balance fitted clothing with dainty, minimalist jewelry and flowy, oversized clothing with bold statement jewelry.  In order to avoid looking weighted down, nix the idea of pairing a heavy necklace with your more tailored items; instead, respect the balance and pair those items with our favorite pearl choker or dainty Kendra Scott exposed druzy pendants.  And to avoid those delicate pieces being overwhelmed by bold patterns and lots of fabric, pair your flowy and oversized clothing with stronger statement pieces that feature mixed media beads and stones and daring pieces such as the horns, tassels, and large stones that adorn most statement jewelry today!  We love pairing our favorite Piko tops and dresses with the latest from DBD jewelry that features pops of colors.

~ A note from the author, Sydney: Something about springtime weather just makes you want to revel in the fresh, green grass and soak up every drop of sun that your skin will drink.  And with that refreshing wind of the new season comes the itch to celebrate each day with the happy colors and patterns of warm weather!  I hope that you, like me, are enjoying perusing the latest on the blog and on Pinterest for inspiration.  But more importantly, I hope you feel a fresh wind in your spirit, a fresh fire in your bones to enjoy each day that this year brings.  As Marilla wisely counseled Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables, “Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.”  Seize the day. Live in it. Bring flowers to a lonely stranger.  Leave a secret card for your co-worker.  Jump in the pool with your clothes on!  Let’s make each day worth living for ourselves and everyone around us.  Blessings!

Create New Ideas With 2016 Color of the Year

Coffee and a good book

Peanut butter and jelly

What do all these things have in common?

One of these things by itself is great.  But the full experience of its value is in the combined balance of its companion.  In the words of Rob Bass, “it takes two to make a thing go right”!  Apparently, Pantone agreed with this statement when they set tradition aside and announced that their 2016 Color of the Year would be a harmonious pair of two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue.

For some, this may lead to another question: What is Pantone?

You know, you really have an inquisitive mind.  I think I like you. 🙂  To answer your question, Pantone is an American corporation best known for its color-matching system that influences many industries, especially those involving textiles.  For years, Pantone has been announcing their official Color of the Year as a way to inspire creative thought and to remind us to celebrate every color on the spectrum for its possibilities.  Many industries such as the fashion world, home decor companies, and the wedding industry work with Pantone to incorporate this color of the year into their products in order to make it available to the consumer.  That’s you!

In recent years, Pantone’s official colors have been rich, one-dimensional shades such as Marsala, Orchid, and Emerald.  For 2016, Pantone decided to break from tradition to bring versatility and tranquil balance in two complimentary colors that work in harmony for fresh inspiration.  So without further ado, today we would like to kick off a celebration of new ideas with ready-to-pin photo collages of these two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue.  We are featuring three areas in which anyone can express their favorite ways of styling these colors of the year, so follow us through our favorite photos that show this duo in fashion, home decor, and weddings for beautiful examples in how you can make these colors all your own this year!

Industry one : fashion

Rose quartz has the ability to perform as an elegant neutral or feminine pastel, and the recent popularity of rose gold jewelry may have been the prelude to this darling hue making a splash in apparel.  With the gentle and light touch of a blushing glow, this shade will translate from sweet spring pastels to serene winter neutrals throughout the year!

A complimentary contrast to rose quartz is the tranquil and pleasant hue of Serenity Blue that both balances and enhances its softer counter-part.  Whether worn alone in our ever-popular chambray shirtdress or paired with its 2016 pink partner in a stunning watercolor like our trending cut-out shoulder top, this sentimental shade is sure to become a favorite for its clean and soothing tones.

Industry two: home decor

Decorating your living spaces really provides the opportunity to experiment and the freedom of creative control with how much of each color you would like to feature in your home.  As seen here, making a statement with a fixed feature such as your front door, a major appliance, or even an accent wall can allow for accentuating with a statement piece.  Or if you’re more of a mix-and-match person, consider collecting small details like rose gold table accents or incorporating another shade like a slate gray.  These colors are just as suitable as featured statement colors or accent colors on a variety of color palettes.  Translate these shades in any style from French Country to Modern!

Industry three: weddings

Weddings are the quintessential event for creating a color theme, and 2016’s color pairing is producing some of my favorite looks for the traditional blue and pink combination.  Far from cutesy and juvenile shades that we see at baby showers, the dusty periwinkle and blushing rose speak elegance and provide undertones of stength and tenderness to make it the perfect balance for a marriage of masculine and feminine colors.  Make your ceremony crisp and clean with precise balances of these two shades or feel free to accentuate using other complimentary colors with verdent greenery, neutral wooden ornaments, golden table accents, or even red roses in your bouquets!  The possibilities are endless to take this inspiration and make it all your own!

Each season will bring new ideas on styling these classic colors, from the pastels of spring to adding pops of bold color to mix with in summer, to the transition to understated neutrals in fall and winter.  We can’t wait to see a regeneration of all-new ideas and themes for 2016!

Which of these areas are you most likely to try the Colors of the Year?  Do you have any particular favorite stylings?

writer~ A note from the author: Are you enjoying this 2016’s Colors of the Year?  Each individual has their own palettes and hues that captivate them, and my anticipation grows each year to see what Pantone might suggest as the new color for inspired experimentation!  Not every year promises a shade that we gravitate towards, but the mission of forcing our minds to quite literally “color outside” of the box is always accomplished.  I hope that you find wonderful ways to make these colors work for you.  Go color your world!

5 Spring Fashion Trends To Inspire You In 2016

Spring Fashion Trends

                                                                          Spring Fashion Trends

I don’t know about you, but I have approached fashion trend reports with more than a little caution – and for good reason!  To be honest, I don’t like to be told what to do when it comes to fashion (okay, maybe when it comes to life in general, too).  Perhaps you’re like me and your rebel streak comes out when someone tries to dictate your wardrobe.  Excuse me, you don’t know my life!  This is especially frustrating when those orchestrating the trends are designing clothes for only one body type.  And frankly, it is unsettling when there is a mystery around what designs, silhouettes, and colors are going to trickle down from the runway or fashion blog.  No matter how high-end some try to make it look, let’s face it: some designs just don’t work for the everywoman!

However, as I began to study fashion in college and became more familiar with how to observe cohesive designs or predict coming trends, I became more comfortable with the idea of allowing these designs to inspire my own personal taste rather than brainwash me into “what’s hot” and what’s not.  Because each woman is different in her figure and in her personality, it is illogical to feel as though fashion bloggers and runway designers set unbreakable rules in place.  So instead of seeing these predictions as intimidating rules to live by, we are free to instead view them as assets in bringing refreshing new ideas to our own personal expressions of style.  Without further ado, we would like to reveal five upcoming trends from the runways and street style inspiration that you can make your own for spring 2016!

One: Flared denim

In fashion, the pendulum tends to swing from one extreme to the other within a period of time and brings refreshing differences from the way we have grown accustomed to styling our wardrobes.  For instance, skinny jeans have taken culture by storm and are here to stay as classic standards.  But this spring, it’s time to celebrate the pendulum’s swing to the other side and to break out the universally-flattering flare leg!  How this cut ever faded into the background is a mystery.  The slim design from thigh to mid-calf is accentuated with a tasteful flare that brings dimension and balance to your figure, and with high waists also enjoying some popularity, the combination gives you endless options to elongate your legs and flatter your shape.  Be sure to check out this how-to in selecting the best shoes to pair with this look!

Two: Ruffles

To be certain, this trend will be fun to watch as it is interpreted for a variety of styles from the dynamic and dramatic to the simple and feminine.  Although I have always been one to approach this style with hesitation, the variations in design for 2016 are eye-catching show stoppers, such as dainty ruffles on cap sleeves or flowing waves encircling maxi skirts.  In our boutique, we love this classic design from Mud Pie in lightweight chambray with fun ruffles on the neckline.  It’s perfectly suited to your work apparel or after-hours “playtime”!

Three: High Necklines

The high neckline is coming back in a couple of different variations such as the Victorian-era fashions from the runways that feature delicate accents like ruffles and lace.  The ’90s are also inspiring a lot of high neck halters that we saw bring a more feminine appeal than the traditional open-neck halter.  We particularly love the high necklines in swimsuit designs for 2016!

Cut-out Shoulders

It’s time to break out the shoulder workouts this season because you might just be playing peekaboo with your sleeves!  The runways are featuring more fun and funky designs to reveal a little skin, but fashion bloggers and street style fashion photographers are capturing this look in a more relatable style with appealing designs.  We are seeing a lot of off-the-shoulder tops, but the most popular style is the cut-out sleeve that guarantees you’ll be comfortable in your own skin.  Enjoy showing a little shoulder as the temperature rises!

Wrap skirts

The hallmark of any trend worth noticing is versatility, and the wrap skirt has such potential to transform your ability to mix and match.  Examples of this trend are all over the map from casual minis to dramatic, flowy maxis, but my personal favorite is the twist on the classy pencil skirt!  The midi length gives the wrap design a chance to spruce up office attire without risking wardrobe malfunctions, and the silhouette is stunning in solids or fun prints!

These are just a few ideas to kickstart your spring wardrobe inspiration!  Other honorable mentions for upcoming trends are:

What do you think of these looks?  Which ones would you try this season?  We would love to know your expert opinion!

~ A note from the author, Sydney:

Thanks for stopping by today for our spring trend forecast!  The study of fashion and culture is fascinating, and I love that we can recreate and inspire with such creativity even with our wardrobes.  I don’t know how I feel about the mule shoe trend, but I am personally very excited to pull my yellow cathead sneakers out again and flare leg jeans are my true love in denim 🙂  Be brave this year and do your thing with your favorite designs that you see!  As a wise lady, once said, “You do you, girl!”  Happy Wednesday, we will see you next week!

Five Unusual Beauty Tips

Five unusual tips for your beauty regimen

For some, beauty regimens mean tranquil time to themselves to think, relax, and creatively put themselves together each morning.  It’s a routine they wouldn’t miss for the world.  For others, a beauty regimen is a chore, a stressful configuration of what to use, when to use it, what to combine, and how to get it done efficiently.  There are numerous and helpful posts that will cater to either crowd to provide the best methods and the best products.  While we hope to share with you some of our favorites, today we would like to explore some more unusual and broader tips for experimentation within your lifestyle and your beauty repertoire!

Experiment One: Give the understudy a chance

We all have that one feature that we are more confident about or at least we are more comfortable in our ability to enhance with makeup and beauty products.  This feature is the star of the show, so to speak.  Maybe it’s your luscious hair, your stunning eyes, or your enviable jawline.  But what if you devoted some time to highlighting a different feature?  (Give yourself a challenge and select the area you feel the least confident about!)  Learn about your features and what makes them distinct like the shape, color, or size.  Then, look up tutorials on different ways to give those areas some love!  If you’ve got the perfect pout, you probably rock red lipstick every day.  But what about your cheekbones?  Put the red lip pout in time-out and draw the eyes up toward your cheekbones with some bronzing powder or dewy blush mousse!  Do you have gorgeous eyes but your skin could use some TLC?  Research or ask a consultant for an accurate match to your complexion and find the best product that gives you illuminating coverage.  And do yourself the favor of drinking water and eating fruits to give your skin a rejuvenated glow!  Highlighting other features will provide you with more wonderful options for different daytime and evening looks!  If you’re looking for some insight on good products or for tutorials on new ways to enhance your features, check out one of my favorite resources at Beauty and the Boutique for wonderful step-by-step educational videos!

brave conversations

Experiment Two: Be a relationship revolutionary

How much of our time on our devices is spent looking at ways we could look better, feel better, do better?  Try putting aside the time you might be spending on your phone so that you can engage with people.  Make an effort to circumvent the small chat and even avoid discussions centered around what you saw online, if possible.  Think of questions that you’ve really wondered about and instead, wonder aloud!  Finally mentioning those thoughts that you believe only you think of might generate some lively and bonding conversation.  Instead of using the same stale questions of  “where are you from?” or “what did you study in college?”, ask others questions that you truly want to know the answer to.  Think of what you might like to be asked and then offer those questions to invite personable dialogue!  Engaging the people around you in the human experience together will challenge you, validate you, and encourage you and those with whom you spend that time!  And when less trivial matters are finally not the order of discussion, personal characteristics like empathy and insight and even some shared laughter will lift your spirit above the things that make you self-aware.  If we don’t want to be judged as books by their covers, we must offer more interesting conversation than simple book title-length sentences.

Experiment Three – Shop deliberately for quality clothing

Too many of us have bought a garment too soon due to pressure, cultural dictations, or our own curiosity that made it seem like a good idea at the time!  But now that it’s out of the store and in the closet, that budding shopping romance has come to a cold and bitter end.  What if we experimented with shopping more thoughtfully and learned to avoid buying cheap, poorly constructed garments?  In order to shop deliberately, make a list of your closet essentials and then add the silhouettes you know that you like or that aren’t the most flattering to your build.  (For me, capris and patterned bottoms are a no-no, but cargo jeans or fit-and-flare dresses are welcomed in my closets!) Then with patience and a discerning eye, shop with deliberate knowledge of what you need from clothing lines that provide high quality fabric and construction.  Your patience will literally pay off as you invest in garments that are well-made, long-lasting, and complementing to your body.  At Walker Boutique, we enjoy providing collections with fine, tailored construction and quality fabrics such as Mud Pie and TYLER BÖE that will give you your money’s worth in quality and items with a long life of use!  One of my favorites in Mud Pie’s spring line is our  Marley shirtdress in chambray with a charming tie waist and figure-flattering button-up silhouette!

Experiment Four: Go to bed thirty minutes earlier

Getting more rest isn’t as unusual a tip and it seems like a no-brainer for health and beauty reasons.  And yet, we STILL don’t do it, do we?  We know it’s better for our bodies, and we know that when we are well-rested, we look and feel more relaxed, confident, and beautiful.  So quit the excuses, Sweetheart!  🙂  Reevaluate and carve out thirty minutes of your time that you may be subconsciously spending in unnecessary areas that are taking away those healthy benefits.  Just for a week, go to bed thirty minutes earlier than normal and see how you feel in the mornings!  This may be more difficult for night owls, but make the decision to power down around 8:30 or 9 in the evening and get in the bed by 10.  Those hours of sleep before midnight are as restorative to your body as all the other hours after midnight combined, so give your brain and body the chance to experience this kind of rest!  Soon you’ll begin to notice the small changes that result in a more rested you and you will have the renewed energy and interest in dressing yourself, as well as the confidence to try new things.

Experiment Five: Try ten new things in a year

Women feel most confident and beautiful not when they spend five hours getting their hair and makeup just right but when they are doing an activity that loosens the bonds on the real woman within.  Numerous red carpet celebrities have been quoted saying that they feel most beautiful when they are doing something they love; why can’t that be true for you, too?  Take the time for a mini-vacation or even a day-trip adventure, get your hands dirty in the yard or garden, volunteer for your favorite local charity, play paintball, or sign up for dancing lessons!  Dancing especially has a unique way of allowing you to express emotions that can’t be put into words.  In the privacy of home, search YouTube to try the fiery flamenco or the spirited lindy hop to loosen up and let your hair down!  Whatever activity you choose, just take the risk to enjoy anything that requires an adventurous spirit and not a stitch of makeup!  Giving yourself – and your face – a break from the routine will provide the chance to get reacquainted with the true you and the reasons you should love that person within.

Some of these ideas may seem unorthodox for incorporating into a beauty regimen, but it’s so important to remember that beauty doesn’t come from a jar or a contour kit!  Beauty comes from the person you are, and it would be a tragic shame to let the world’s expectations or dictations squelch all that you are or prevent you from taking care of yourself, body and soul.  We hope that you will try at least one experiment for just a month and see what a difference it makes both in your appearance and more importantly, your spirit.  Until next Wednesday, Beautiful! 😉

~ A note from Sydney:  Thank you, dear Reader, for coming to visit with us again!  We are eager to learn more about how we can serve our customers in lasting ways and to know what matters to you.  I invite you to please do us the honor of sharing with us by your comments, emails, or posts on any of our social media any questions or comments you may have for us!  Is there a line you wish we would carry?  Do you have questions about weddings, fashion, home decor, or lifestyle interests?  We are here to listen to what you have to say, and it would be the greatest pleasure to hear from you!  Please comment below and be on the lookout for upcoming newsletters and voluntary surveys if you are interested in providing customer feedback!  Until next time, Happy Wednesday!

~ A note from the author, Sydney: One of my favorite quotes is from entrepreneur Dale Partridge: “A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.”  Isn’t that so true today?  With an infinity of information at our fingertips, we live in a constant state of needing inspiration, direction, motivation, or knowledge; but our time – and attention spans – are so limited.  I hope that today’s post provided you with time well-spent discovering meaningful resources that will encourage you and challenge you to live the life to which you are called and to chase after the dream that ignites a fire in your bones!  As Zig Ziglar said, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”  Now go – take a hold of that dream!  We’ll see you next week!

Fashion Trends vs. Personal Style

Fashion continues to captivate us throughout the decades, and taking a fashion course or just spending a little time observing the culture will teach you that nothing is truly new.  Trends come and go as they are dictated from one season to the next, and the pendulum of obsession will swing from one style to another.  But every new look is a recreation or combination of things that have already been established in the fashion world.  So, if nothing is new, but each person is unique, how can we develop our own sense of personal style?  First, let’s clarify what we define as style and trend, shall we?

A trend is a created desire for a particular silhouette, pattern, accessory, or combination of these things dictated by those who influence our culture.  Designers, celebrities, fashion editors, and now bloggers all possess the power which they exert to highlight the looks that soon catch on and the public becomes insatiably hungry for the next “new” thing.  In the fast paced, high fashion world, trends tend to run for one to two seasons as that particular item enjoys its proverbial 15 minutes of fame and those with influence show us the variety of ways to use that trend.  However, trickling from the runway to the streets of America, a trend can run in one to three year cycles of popularity among the population, later fading into fashion history or becoming a staple element to a group’s personal standard of fashion.  For instance, we associate the 1950s with A-line midi skirts, cardigan sweaters, and the classic red lips and red nail polish that was the main color women had to accessorize with.  For the 80s, the most memorable fabric pattern was tie dye and permed hair was often styled with barrettes.  In the 2000s, synthetic fabrics, chokers, frosted lip gloss, mini skirts, and crop tops were riding the wave of re-engineered popularity.  And now, in the 10s, we are experiencing modern takes on many of these contemporary trends.  For instance 80s tie dye has evolved from those nostalgic radial patterns into the various binding and dyeing techniques of Japanese shibori.  From decade to decade or classic standard to ingenious recreations, a trend will ebb and flow throughout our culture with the tide of fashion’s vast sea of creative ideas.

While trends come and go, style is a personal possession of fashion sense with a longer-lasting statement that expresses one’s personality and preference.  Most often, it is typical to blend more than one style for a complete expression of one’s taste, while some choose very particular lines, patterns, silhouettes, and accessories that make a distinct expression.  By personalizing these fashion styles, we express our inner selves.  Here is where we make our marks and express who we are to the world.  In order to illustrate a portrait of the characteristics of style, here are two examples of very different and distinct expressions of personality: preppy and bohemian.

Preppy is often described as tailored, groomed, and classic.  In fact, upon entering the term “classic fashion” on Pinterest, most of the images returned are easily recognizable preppy looks!  The preppy look is often associated with monograms and pearls, ballet flats and riding boots, tailored blazers, button-ups, knee skirts, plaid scarves, and perhaps some distinct fabrics and prints like seersucker and gingham.  Although the particular way of styling this look might change with age, varying from bows in her hair to an Ann Taylor rewards card, the preppy woman is a distinct and classic lady that knows her preference for clean lines, close fits, and bright colors.

Bohemians are on the other end of the spectrum, often described as free-spirited and earthy.  A boho girl will prefer over-sized garments such as tunics and a flowing silhouette like a maxi dress, and if you peer into her closet, you will find earthy tones, funky accessories, and maybe even a jewelry dish filled with moonstone, druzy, or turquoise.  Her favorite shops might include Lucky Brand, Free People, or Anthropologie, where she incorporates her style in her fashion as well as her home. Floral prints, neutrals, and understated, cool colors are her forte, and her laid-back style makes her stand out as a woman all her own.

So how do you shape your personal sense of style?  Remember, it isn’t about what you must or must not do according to someone else’s rules.  The entire point of fashion is to be yourself. While a trend is an inspiration to recreate and reinvigorate your creativity, your personal style should never be capitalized on whatever is the current trend.  Your personality isn’t a trend; you are a unique and gifted individual, therefore your style should be, as well.   Lilly Pulitzer expressed it perfectly: “Being happy never goes out of style.”  If you’re happy and confident, you will show it in your sense of style!

As we all know, the fashion world and trends are set up such that designers create new looks that hit the runway, and celebrities, fashion editors, and other fashionistas then begin to use their influence to dictate what will trickle down to the general public.  But where do these influencers get their inspiration or make their decisions?  You got it: their personal taste!  There is no difference between you and Anna Wintour or the movie star that everyone wants to emulate.  The runway or fashion editorial’s true purpose is to generate new ideas to inspire you The runway, color of the year, and trending articles are ALL to give you inspiration on a new way to express yourself.  Imagine your style as a canvas — no one likes to paint the same picture over and over for years!  Your personality is your paintbrush and technique of styling yourself, and the changing trends are ways to constantly inspire your creativity and add color and dimension to your personal style canvas!

So what is the framework for navigating the world of trends and style?  If you want to know how to command your own sense of expression and how to use a trend to inspire your own style, then remember these important tips:

The first step to possessing personal style is to know what looks good on you.  There are numerous silhouettes and styles that I adore (pencil skirts, peplum tops, and pants with stripes or floral patterns), but once I put them on, I’m not excited at all about the way it looks on me.  I begin to notice the areas it over accentuates or does not flatter, and suddenly it isn’t as appealing as it was on the hanger or in the photo.  Shopping online is especially tempting to make you think, “well maybe THIS one will be different.”  But trust yourself!  If you repeatedly have found something to not be as exciting to you on your person as it was in theory, save your money or go buy something fabulous that has proven to be tried and true for you!  Don’t get hung up on what doesn’t work for you, and start channeling your creativity towards styling the looks that DO work for you!

This second tip modifies the first: know what works for you, but don’t let an area of insecurity shadow your confidence and creativity!  If you want to be stronger, sleeker, etc, then do whatever you can to strengthen your confidence in a healthy way!  But don’t let a garment be your motivation.  Your health and beauty far outweigh the “need” to fit into those skinny jeans, and that size 2 romper is too small and narrow a goal for you to live for!  Life is too short to hide in your closet, afraid to be bold enough to wear something unconventional, and unconventional creativity is where style really begins!

So tell me… what style would you like to see more of?  How would you describe your personal style?

~ A note from the author, Sydney: Thank you so much for visiting Walker Boutique’s blog!  This topic is close to my heart, because after studying fashion as part of my college degree, I learned quite a bit about the sociology of fashion.  Although I can nerd out over silhouettes, construction, and my favorite designers (Hi, Jenny Packham!), what has stayed with me for years is the battle to enjoy trends without sacrificing our dignity or who we are in our own personalities.  It is innate in women to make things lovely, whether that means decorating our homes or styling ourselves, and far too many live in confusion about the “rules,” or become frustrated in navigating the trends.  My hope is that your inner beauty, wonderful personality, and distinct perspective will embolden you to dictate your own expression of fashion and to feel the freedom to be who you want to be.  Wear the outfit, don’t let it wear you!  Have a wonderful week and come see us next Wednesday for our next topic!
