Five unusual tips for your beauty regimen

For some, beauty regimens mean tranquil time to themselves to think, relax, and creatively put themselves together each morning.  It’s a routine they wouldn’t miss for the world.  For others, a beauty regimen is a chore, a stressful configuration of what to use, when to use it, what to combine, and how to get it done efficiently.  There are numerous and helpful posts that will cater to either crowd to provide the best methods and the best products.  While we hope to share with you some of our favorites, today we would like to explore some more unusual and broader tips for experimentation within your lifestyle and your beauty repertoire!

Experiment One: Give the understudy a chance

We all have that one feature that we are more confident about or at least we are more comfortable in our ability to enhance with makeup and beauty products.  This feature is the star of the show, so to speak.  Maybe it’s your luscious hair, your stunning eyes, or your enviable jawline.  But what if you devoted some time to highlighting a different feature?  (Give yourself a challenge and select the area you feel the least confident about!)  Learn about your features and what makes them distinct like the shape, color, or size.  Then, look up tutorials on different ways to give those areas some love!  If you’ve got the perfect pout, you probably rock red lipstick every day.  But what about your cheekbones?  Put the red lip pout in time-out and draw the eyes up toward your cheekbones with some bronzing powder or dewy blush mousse!  Do you have gorgeous eyes but your skin could use some TLC?  Research or ask a consultant for an accurate match to your complexion and find the best product that gives you illuminating coverage.  And do yourself the favor of drinking water and eating fruits to give your skin a rejuvenated glow!  Highlighting other features will provide you with more wonderful options for different daytime and evening looks!  If you’re looking for some insight on good products or for tutorials on new ways to enhance your features, check out one of my favorite resources at Beauty and the Boutique for wonderful step-by-step educational videos!

Experiment Two: Be a relationship revolutionary

How much of our time on our devices is spent looking at ways we could look better, feel better, do better?  Try putting aside the time you might be spending on your phone so that you can engage with people.  Make an effort to circumvent the small chat and even avoid discussions centered around what you saw online, if possible.  Think of questions that you’ve really wondered about and instead, wonder aloud!  Finally mentioning those thoughts that you believe only you think of might generate some lively and bonding conversation.  Instead of using the same stale questions of  “where are you from?” or “what did you study in college?”, ask others questions that you truly want to know the answer to.  Think of what you might like to be asked and then offer those questions to invite personable dialogue!  Engaging the people around you in the human experience together will challenge you, validate you, and encourage you and those with whom you spend that time!  And when less trivial matters are finally not the order of discussion, personal characteristics like empathy and insight and even some shared laughter will lift your spirit above the things that make you self-aware.  If we don’t want to be judged as books by their covers, we must offer more interesting conversation than simple book title-length sentences.

Experiment Three – Shop deliberately for quality clothing

Too many of us have bought a garment too soon due to pressure, cultural dictations, or our own curiosity that made it seem like a good idea at the time!  But now that it’s out of the store and in the closet, that budding shopping romance has come to a cold and bitter end.  What if we experimented with shopping more thoughtfully and learned to avoid buying cheap, poorly constructed garments?  In order to shop deliberately, make a list of your closet essentials and then add the silhouettes you know that you like or that aren’t the most flattering to your build.  (For me, capris and patterned bottoms are a no-no, but cargo jeans or fit-and-flare dresses are welcomed in my closets!) Then with patience and a discerning eye, shop with deliberate knowledge of what you need from clothing lines that provide high quality fabric and construction.  Your patience will literally pay off as you invest in garments that are well-made, long-lasting, and complementing to your body.  At Walker Boutique, we enjoy providing collections with fine, tailored construction and quality fabrics such as Mud Pie and TYLER BÖE that will give you your money’s worth in quality and items with a long life of use!  One of my favorites in Mud Pie’s spring line is our  Marley shirtdress in chambray with a charming tie waist and figure-flattering button-up silhouette!

Experiment Four: Go to bed thirty minutes earlier

Getting more rest isn’t as unusual a tip and it seems like a no-brainer for health and beauty reasons.  And yet, we STILL don’t do it, do we?  We know it’s better for our bodies, and we know that when we are well-rested, we look and feel more relaxed, confident, and beautiful.  So quit the excuses, Sweetheart!  🙂  Reevaluate and carve out thirty minutes of your time that you may be subconsciously spending in unnecessary areas that are taking away those healthy benefits.  Just for a week, go to bed thirty minutes earlier than normal and see how you feel in the mornings!  This may be more difficult for night owls, but make the decision to power down around 8:30 or 9 in the evening and get in the bed by 10.  Those hours of sleep before midnight are as restorative to your body as all the other hours after midnight combined, so give your brain and body the chance to experience this kind of rest!  Soon you’ll begin to notice the small changes that result in a more rested you and you will have the renewed energy and interest in dressing yourself, as well as the confidence to try new things.

Experiment Five: Try ten new things in a year

Women feel most confident and beautiful not when they spend five hours getting their hair and makeup just right but when they are doing an activity that loosens the bonds on the real woman within.  Numerous red carpet celebrities have been quoted saying that they feel most beautiful when they are doing something they love; why can’t that be true for you, too?  Take the time for a mini-vacation or even a day-trip adventure, get your hands dirty in the yard or garden, volunteer for your favorite local charity, play paintball, or sign up for dancing lessons!  Dancing especially has a unique way of allowing you to express emotions that can’t be put into words.  In the privacy of home, search YouTube to try the fiery flamenco or the spirited lindy hop to loosen up and let your hair down!  Whatever activity you choose, just take the risk to enjoy anything that requires an adventurous spirit and not a stitch of makeup!  Giving yourself – and your face – a break from the routine will provide the chance to get reacquainted with the true you and the reasons you should love that person within.

Some of these ideas may seem unorthodox for incorporating into a beauty regimen, but it’s so important to remember that beauty doesn’t come from a jar or a contour kit!  Beauty comes from the person you are, and it would be a tragic shame to let the world’s expectations or dictations squelch all that you are or prevent you from taking care of yourself, body and soul.  We hope that you will try at least one experiment for just a month and see what a difference it makes both in your appearance and more importantly, your spirit.  Until next Wednesday, Beautiful! 😉
